Characterize the current produced water
Record dispersed and free oil, suspended solids, salinity, pH, temperature, iron, scale-control chemistry and emulsion-breaking treatment. Preserve sampling point and residence history.
Produced water changes with wells and operating conditions. A jar test on an unrepresentative cooled sample may not predict the live separator.
Place polymer after the right upstream step
Polyacrylamide is normally evaluated as a flocculant aid after oil-water separation or destabilization, not as a universal replacement for demulsifier or coagulant chemistry.
Map chemical sequence, mixing and residence time. Incorrect order can stabilize oil droplets, consume polymer or produce fragile solids.
Screen ionic profile and dose
Compare plausible charge and molecular profiles at equal active dose. Evaluate treated-water turbidity or solids, residual oil, float or sludge behavior and filterability.
A large visible floc is not enough. The selected product must improve the actual flotation, settling or filtration step without creating carryover.
Reproduce salinity and temperature
Use representative water and preserve temperature when it materially affects oil separation. Include credible high-salinity and upset conditions in the shortlist confirmation.
Record emulsion breaker, coagulant and pH adjustment. These variables can reverse a polymer ranking.
Confirm on the surface equipment
Hold feed and separator settings stable, establish a baseline and change one chemistry variable at a time. Track liquid quality, recovered oil, solids handling, throughput and chemical consumption.
Approve a bounded operating range. More polymer is not the correct response to every oil or solids excursion.
Request a traceable supply response
Provide water analysis, process diagram, current chemicals, separator, treatment target, quantity and destination. Request current COA and SDS for the proposed code.
The operator must confirm discharge, reuse and waste-management requirements for the site. Product selection does not establish regulatory compliance.
