Locate the polymer duty
Define whether polymer supports flotation, clarification, nutshell filtration pretreatment or sludge handling. Map upstream separation, demulsifier and coagulant steps.
Adding polymer at an undefined point can worsen emulsions or send fragile floc through pumps.
Sample the live process
Collect after the upstream chemistry that will remain in service and record oil, solids, salinity, pH and temperature. Note well or separator changes.
Preserve a current baseline because produced-water composition can move rapidly.
Use a staged bench screen
First identify plausible chemistry at equal active dose; then optimize mixing, dose and residence for the top candidates. Include untreated and incumbent references.
Measure oil and solids outcomes with site methods. Visual clarity is supportive, not sufficient.
Protect downstream equipment
Observe float or sludge volume, dewaterability and filter pressure. A treatment that transfers a problem to filters or waste handling is not optimized.
Include recovered-oil quality and recycle consequences when relevant.
Confirm on the actual separator
Run controlled plant points with stable hydraulics and chemical sequence. Allow carryover to clear before sampling.
Approve a range tied to water quality, separator loading and measured output.
Define operational and regulatory boundaries
Document what the polymer trial demonstrates and what it does not. The operator confirms chemical approval, produced-water reuse, discharge and waste rules.
Retain product identity, SDS, COA, lot and receiving checks with the operating record.
